What is the Gospel?
The basics of the Gospel:
The Gospel is the good news of the coming of the Kingdom of God. The Gospel is the news that Jesus saves sinners by coming into the world, living a spotless and righteous life, dying, and being raised from the dead to new life, so that all who believe in Him may have eternal life and a restored relationship with God and one another.
Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. (1 Corinthians 15:1-8 ESV)
What does it take to believe in the Gospel?
John Piper sums it up here (desiringgod.org):
Therefore to believe the gospel is not only to accept the awesome truths that 1) God is holy, 2) we are hopeless sinners, 3) Christ died and rose again for sinners, and 4) this great salvation is enjoyed by faith in Christ-but believing the gospel is also to treasure Jesus Christ as your unsearchable riches. What makes the gospel Gospel is that it brings a person into the everlasting and ever-increasing joy of Jesus Christ.:
So, the gospel is the news that God has made a way back to Himself, through the cross of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. We who place our hope in Christ have come to this point: because, if myou confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and nbelieve in your heartothat God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
If Jesus Christ was in fact raised from the dead, then what we think about Him is of utmost importance in our lives.
If you are a believer in Christ already, rejoice in that fact today! And if you are not a follower of Christ, I pray that you would look into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and in Him find your salvation.
